Originally, Mission San Juan served as a tanker during World War II, supplying fuel to U.S. and Allied forces. Retained after the war and renamed in 1949, it served in the Korean War and was later converted into a missile range instrumentation ship for major Cold War missions, including the Gemini and Apollo programs. It was decommissioned and repurposed several times, ending its voyage in Taiwan in 1984.
