- Los Angeles-class submarines are nuclear-powered fast attack submarines (SSN) in service with the U.S. Navy. 62 were built from 1972 to 1996 and are named after American cities such as "New York City", "Dallas", "Boston" and "Los Angeles", which gave the class its name and was the first unit built and the lead ship.
These submarines are 362 feet (110 m) long, 33 feet (10 m) wide, have a top speed of 35 knots (65 km/h) and a maximum diving depth of 1,480 feet (450 m). They carry about 25 torpedo-tube-launched weapons and mines, and the last 31 boats of the class also have special vertical launch tubes for launching Tomahawk missiles.
