  • 425 Park Avenue is an office high-rise, a 118 m (387 ft) tall building constructed in 1954–1957. The original building was demolished and replaced by a new, more efficient and modern building, but retaining about 25% of the original structure: a stopgap measure designed to circumvent the area restrictions imposed by the 1961 zoning ordinance, which would otherwise have to be lifted. It was very difficult to maintain the original structure during the construction process of area reduction: first the top 1–18th floors were demolished, then temporary steel structures were installed to support the remaining 17 floors, and then further demolition was carried out; after installing up to 750 tons of support structures, the rear of the building was demolished. Twelve new megacolumns were erected, six as exterior columns at the front of the building and six in the center of the building. The new building core was also built at the rear to connect all other floors retained in the new building, while the remaining unconnected floors were demolished. Finally, the building was completed on December 4, 2018 and the renovation work was completed in October 2022.
