In early 1965, Shelby announced the release of the Cobra II, equipped with a 427 cubic-inch V8 engine replacing the 289. In June of that year, two rear-engine GT prototypes debuted at Le Mans, equipped with the big 427 engine instead of the 289. Europeans booed this clunky, half-baked V8 engine with its bumpers and single four-barrel carburetor. A year later, the Ford 427 dominated the French classic race, taking the top three places, with Shelby's two cars finishing the final lap side by side in first place.

The GT-500 was a car for adults. Shelby's Mustang made great strides in three years - growing from a teenager to an adult. The 1965 GT 350 was a car for die-hard enthusiasts - a wild Mustang that was as exciting to drive as the Maserati 300S and had a comparable market value.
