  • Grond, also called Wolf's Head, was a 30 meter long battering ram with a head in the shape of a ravenous wolf. Although named after Morgoth's warhammer, it was created in reference to the Wolf of Angband, Carcharoth.
Grond was forged in Mordor by smiths from Barad-dûr specifically for use by the army besieging the city of Minas Tirith in Gondor. As a tribute, it shared its name with the "Hammer of the Underworld," a large mace wielded by Morgoth, Sauron's former master.
  • Grond was said to be 60 feet tall, 150 feet long, and as thick as a giant tree, making it much larger than any other battering ram of its kind in Middle-earth. The fire burned in its great maw. It was operated by a team of large beasts, escorted by a group of orcs, and required several trolls to use it. The creatures that pulled it occasionally went mad and ran across the battlefield, trampling everything and everyone. Aided by the "spells of doom" imposed upon him during his forging in Mordor and by the Witch-King of Angmar during the siege, Grond shattered the formidable Great Gate of Minas Tirith with just three or four blows.
