Building New Horizons, One Brick at a Time: An Interview with MOC Designer Simon

Building New Horizons, One Brick at a Time: An Interview with MOC Designer Simon - LesDiy

Team LesDiy |

Hello, building block enthusiasts and creative minds! Today, we’re diving into the fascinating world of MOC (My Own Creation) with Simon, a talented designer from Germany, whose passion for skyscrapers has driven him to recreate some of the world’s tallest buildings with incredible attention to detail. With a love for engineering and a background in aeronautics, Simon is making waves in the MOC community. Get ready to be inspired!

Let’s Get to Know Simon: Simon kicked off our chat with a warm self-introduction: “My name is Simon, I’m from Germany, and I’m currently studying Aeronautical Engineering at TH Wildau near Berlin.” Ah, engineering—no wonder his creations are so precise! But Simon isn’t just any engineering student. He’s a lifelong Lego fan who found his calling in designing skyscraper MOCs, combining his love for tall structures with his eye for intricate details.

How It All Began: Since childhood, Simon has been fascinated by skyscrapers, especially iconic ones like the original World Trade Center in New York City. “Not only were they a masterpiece of engineering, but they also shaped the NYC skyline like no other buildings,” he explained. This admiration sparked his journey to build a MOC version of the World Trade Center, which he calls “one of the largest and (in my opinion) most beautiful designs I have ever made.”

Professionally, Simon started his MOC journey in 2021, uploading his designs to Rebrickable, a platform for sharing Lego creations. His Goal? To recreate the world’s tallest and most iconic buildings—like the Singer Building, Burj Khalifa, and beyond—capturing their impressive scale and historical significance. Simon shared, “I especially like my series of the tallest buildings in history, starting with the Singer Building completed in the early 1900s, to the Burj Khalifa with its 828 meters in height and my MOC being just over 1 meter tall.”

Inspiration & Process: Designing a skyscraper MOC isn’t as simple as stacking bricks—if only! For Simon, the process starts with precision and planning. He carefully calculates each structure’s dimensions, converting them into Lego studs, and considers how to capture each building’s unique facade and shape. “I mostly use Google Maps and skyscraperpage.com to get the dimensions right,” he shared.

Once the measurements are set, the digital work begins. Using a 3D software called “Studio” by Bricklink, Simon constructs his MOCs virtually before bringing them to life. Depending on the complexity, each build can take anywhere from 4 to 16 hours. With over 60 MOCs completed, he’s honed his skills, paying close attention to every detail, from facades to windows, so that each MOC matches the real-world structure as closely as possible. This dedication to detail is evident across his portfolio, which spans not only buildings but also rockets, ships, and trains!

Future MOC Ambitions: What’s next for Simon? More buildings, more height, and more creativity! With over 7,000 skyscrapers worldwide, Simon sees endless possibilities and plans to keep scaling new heights (literally). “I luckily won’t run out of ideas anytime soon,” he jokes.

Beyond Lego Bricks: When Simon isn’t engineering tiny skyscrapers, he enjoys spending time with family, his girlfriend, and friends, as well as traveling—he’s explored not only Europe but also various countries across Asia. And his message to fellow builders? “Keep building, keep exploring, and do the things you enjoy, including building with bricks in adulthood.”

Simon’s story is a true testament to following one’s passion, even if it involves towering ambitions and thousands of tiny bricks. So whether you’re new to MOC or a seasoned builder, take a page from Simon’s book: dream big, build bigger, and enjoy the process—one Lego brick at a time.
